How to Prepare for Discovery Day (and What to Watch For)

Discovery Day is mutual evaluation, not a sales pitch. Here's how to prep — and the subtle red flags most candidates miss.

Discovery Day is the franchisor's last gate before awarding you a franchise. It's also your last chance to gut-check the leadership team in person. Most candidates over-prepare on what they'll say and under-prepare on what to watch for.

Bring 8–10 specific questions

  • What's changed in the system in the last 12 months?
  • What's the biggest challenge a new franchisee faces, and how does corporate help?
  • How does the field support team work — who would I call on day 30?
  • Where is the brand investing R&D and marketing dollars next year?
  • What's the average tenure of the field support team?

Watch for

  • Whether the CEO knows current franchisee names by memory (good sign)
  • Whether different team members give consistent answers about strategy
  • How the team talks about underperforming franchisees — empathy vs blame
  • Whether they're transparent about what they're working on and what's broken
  • Energy in the office — busy and focused, or quiet and idle?

What you don't owe them

Discovery Day is not a commitment. Even if everyone is warm and the brand offers you a territory at the end of the day, you have at least 14 days to review the FDD before signing — use them. A brand that pressures you to sign at Discovery Day is showing you exactly how they'll treat you as a franchisee.
